FACE
FACE is an American nonprofit organization dedicated to cultural and educational exchanges between France and the US. It supports and facilitates the creation of film, visual arts, theatre, dance, contemporary music, jazz and literature in the context of reciprocal French-American cultural exchange programs. FACE also created the French American "University Partnership Fund" which supports the creation of groundbreaking graduate and research programs among partner universities in each country. FACE is principally based in New York City but its French-American Board is present on both sides of he Atlantic. In New York, it works in partnership with the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in the United States. FACE sets a new precedent in cultural relations with its leverage of private and public resources to support innovative dialogue and exchange. FACE’s nonprofit status enables both the American and the French organizations to receive tax- deductible contributions. The selection of the projects which FACE supports is made in each field of activity by specialized committees of independent French and American experts of great standing within their given fields of activity.
LYON OPERA BALLET
The Lyon Opera Ballet is a classical ballet company with a strong orientation towards contemporary dance. It was created as an independent dance company within the Lyon Opera in 1969. Yorgos Loukos, who has been its director for the past nineteen years, first came to Lyon as assistant, then co-artistic director, in 1984 and 1988 respectively. Under his direction, the company of thirty-one dancers, representing ten different nationalities, has distinguished itself as the French company with the largest repertory of contemporary works: out of eighty-six, forty-four were World Premieres. Maguy Marin, William Forsythe, and Merce Cunningham, whose work will be presented at the Joyce Theatre, are three artists from a long and illustrious list which also includes Trisha Brown, Lucinda Childs, and Bill T. Jones. Yorgos Loukos, Director of the company since 1991, is a world-renowned figure in the world of dance and in the Arts. The Lyon Opera Ballet has not toured the US since 2006. It was last in New York City in 2007 when one work was presented in City Center’s “Fall for Dance” festival.
