In this time of intense global competition, the Partner University Fund (PUF) is creating new educational and research partnerships across disciplines and national boundaries to prepare our brightest young scholars to be world leaders in their respective fields.
Established in 2007, PUF is a collaboration between the French government and American private and corporate donors to support academic partnerships between French and American institutions of higher education. PUF promotes three-year university academic and research partnerships at the graduate and post-doctoral levels of study. This innovative program supports joint research, mobility of professors and students, dual degrees, and shared curricula in all disciplines.
Whereas many programs provide highly specific funding that makes diverse partnerships difficult, PUF offers the advantage of a single funding tool to support complex, multifaceted projects. PUF co-finances up to 30% of the total project cost (up to $80,000 per year). Thanks to a generous grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, PUF co-finances projects in the humanities up to 60% of the total cost (up to $160,000 per year).
There are currently 43 American and 42 French universities participating in PUF, highlighting both the need and enthusiasm for meaningful academic cooperation on both sides of the Atlantic. Over the past five years, the program has awarded 71 three-year grants in a variety of disciplines including business, law, earth sciences, and musicology. Indeed, interest in the program continues to grow. Since 2007 applications have risen 30%, reaching 100 per year on average.
The One and Two-Photon Nanovalves PUF project investigates nanoparticles that deliver anticancer drugs to cancerous cells and has led to the development of a revolutionary cancer-fighting technique. The collaborators have even established a university degree for the study of nanovalves.
