“Mr.
Ozon… has an evident fondness for combining earnest
melodrama with self-conscious gimmickry. … The real
ingenuity of ‘5x2’ lies in his mastery of
emotional shorthand. He tells us very little about the
characters and seems to have encouraged [the actors] not
to be too obvious or revealing.”

A depiction
of an emotionally-charged divorce, 5x2 tells the
story of the intense but ill-fated relationship of a couple.
In François Ozon’s inventive portrait of a modern
marriage, a series of vignettes are played out in reverse
chronological order as Marion and Gilles are seen at various
moments of their relationship. When they host a dinner party,
an air of intimacy born of too much wine causes them to reveal
sexual secrets that underscore their differences. During a
momentous moment of their marriage, Gilles fails to show up
at the hospital when their son is born. On their wedding night,
Gilles falls asleep early and Marion has an affair with a
stranger. And finally, they first meet at a resort where Gilles
is vacationing with his long-time girlfriend. The film ends
as Marion and Gilles walk off into the sunset. In his new
film, François Ozon transforms a conventional love
story into an interesting study of human behavior. As he explains,
“… Starting at the end and working gradually backwards
to the first encounter seemed like a good way of reaching
a true, lucid reading of a couple’s story. I wanted
the audience to see the range of different emotions two people
experience in the course of their lives together.”
