Both
Paul and the film would seem maddening if they werent so passionately
sincere, and if Paul did not gaze at the films many beautiful
young actresses with such an amazed, seductive gleam in his eye. Though
the discheveled Paul is no matinee idol, its not hard to see
why he has three hours worth of love and friendship to dissect
here. His character burns with rueful romanticism and the film does
too. - Janet Maslin, The New York Times.
Paul
Dedalus is 29. He works as an assistant professor in a Paris university.
He wants to quit his job but can't quite bring himself to and he can't
quite finish his doctorate which would make him a full-professor.
Paul continues to live this half-grown up existence, waiting for his
life as a man to begin. He has been dating the same girl, Esther,
for ten years. An unhappy relationship, they have been trying to break
up for almost as long. Two years ago he had a fling with his best
friend's girlfriend. But this is only the beginning of his problems.
