“In the end, nothing and no one is reduced to the formulaic requirements of a genre. Dominique seeks knowledge of another human being to help understand her own feelings. Quentin resists being charming or sincere or even attentive for fear of becoming boring and predictable enough to be easily abandoned.” - Andrew Sarris, The New York Observer.

Adopted from a novel by Japanese author Yukio Mishima, this film tells the story of an intense and immediate physical attraction between two very different people. Dominique, a poise, sophisticated career woman is drawn to Quentin, a handsome, streetwise hustler. She offers him a luxurious place to live and a regular allowance in exchange for the passion and excitement he brings to her dull life. Eventually the difference between their ages, their status and their experience, erodes their relationship and each is driven dangerously close to the edge of despair.
