Thirty year-old
Christine Blanc is a temporary secretary in a small provincial
town. She lives an unassuming life; visiting the shopping
mall, seeing her parents weekly, taking driving lessons and
frequenting the local pub. She is a solitary woman yet she
yearns to “belong.” She would like to have her
work valued and to have a group of friends but her isolation
has left her unprepared for normal social interaction. Although
she wants to be socially active, she is never able to really
“fit in.” She develops an awkward friendship with
Patricia, her contact at the employment agency, and invites
her for dinner. What promises to be a light dinner turns into
a feast of expensive dishes that Christine has prepared just
for the two of them. In an effort to identify with Patricia
and knowing that Patricia collects owl figurines, Christine
purchases a number of them and carefully arranges them in
her apartment prior to the dinner. One day, Christine’s
frustrations explode and in a panic she beats Patricia to
death at a public swimming pool. After the murder her life
improves. She befriends her co-workers, gets a full-time job
and finds a boyfriend. She becomes “one of us”.
Everything goes well until the police investigation of the
murder leads to her.
