Ill Sing for You is an exceptional odyssey
through the geography both of a country and of a human
soul. There is a sense of timelessness
The film
is thoughtful and slow and yet it seems to be over in
no time at all, leaving you wanting to rewind the tape
and watch all over again. Graham Hendersen | Rhythm |

During their
struggle for independence in the sixties, The Malian people
woke up every morning with the sound of Boubacar KarKar
Traorés voice on the radio. KarKars songs
of freedom, patriotism and nationalism brought hope of a better
future to millions of Malians. His sense of style is just
as important as his music in explaining his popularity. He
took inspiration from American culture, dressed like Elvis
Presley and played the electric guitar. After independence
he gave up music to support his family and his wife Pierrette.
Pierrette died abruptly and, disoriented, he migrated to France.
No one in Mali heard from him again, until he was rediscovered
by an English producer years later. Through black and white
photographs, historical clips, interviews, and vibrant footage
of modern Mali, Jacques Sarasin follows in the footsteps of
KarKar in Kayes, his birthplace. The documentary also includes
performances by KarKar today, as he guides the filmmaker through
his native Mali, from the Dogon country to Timbuktu.
