“As the characters in the film say, ‘Communication is a question of luck. Often it works, often it doesn’t...’ More important than the message itself is the act of wanting to communicate, the attempt to go towards the other. Even if the other doesn’t hear a thing because the communication is bad, he knows that at a certain moment of the day someone attempted to speak to him.” - Abderrahmane Sissako, Interview with...

Part of the series “2000 Seen By,” this film offers a unique look into the culture of Maurtius, a community rarely seen on film. On the eve of the 21st century, Sissako, an African filmmaker living in France returns to his native village of Sokolo. He has not returned to see his father since he left to continue his film education in Russia. He rediscovers a familiar place, observe life under the harsh African sun or cycles in the desert landscape. Desperately trying to communicate with France from the minimal post-office, he discovers that daily life hasn’t changed much for the village inhabitants, and that the beginning of a new millenium has little meaning for them. The beauty and simplicity of Sokolo’s way of life is the extreme opposite of what the filmmaker has become accustomed to in France. This pilgrimage back to his roots takes the spectator on a voyage into a poetic vision of the world. Free from the frenzy of the year 2000, Sokolo offers an oasis of peace and simplicity.
